Hey guys, just wondering if most of the lakes closer to seoul will be frozen due to the cold weather. I am not sure as Australia unfortunately does not experience such cold temperatures. thanks

Almost all the waters in Korea will freeze over to some extent during January and February, North and South.

Your best bet for winter fishing is ice fishing out in Gangwon-do for trout and other river fish.

Or you can find and fish at the stocked trout ponds which are always open throughout the winter.

George, my family and I visited the Hwacheon ice festival (your second link) in January 2010 and it is great fun. Lots of things to do besides fishing.

The Inje ice fishing festival is for 빙어 which are small, but you catch a ton of them. postfiles3.naver.net/20100204_66/e4season_12652135692326DU35_jpg/%EB%B9%99%EC%96%B41_e4season.jpg?type=w3The Hwacheon festival is probably my favorite though. I've gone twice and it was a blast each time. The first time I went with a film crew for the show Adventure Club on Arirang TV here in Korea. We got snowed out of a temple stay program so we got to go ice fishing instead. Granted, a lot of the trout you catch will be snagged rather than them actually taking the lure. They dump farm raised fish into the frozen, dammed off part of the river. Take the metal jigs they sell and rig an extra treble hook onto the top o-ring if you want to almost guarantee catching something. My favorite part is the bare hands fishing. You jump into the water wearing some clothes they make you wear and try to pull trout out of the water with your hands. Your hands go numb after ten seconds and it gets tricky, but it's fun.
